Short, general definitions of words that come up often in financial conversations.
Growth calculated on both the original amount and on growth already added. Its effect depends on rate, time and consistency, none of which are guaranteed.
Spreading exposure across different areas so that no single one dominates the outcome. It can reduce concentration risk; it does not remove risk.
How readily something can be turned into cash without a significant loss in value.
The degree of uncertainty and potential loss a person or business is willing and able to accept in pursuit of an objective.
The length of time before money is expected to be needed for a particular goal.
The funds a business uses for day-to-day operations: broadly, short-term assets less short-term obligations.
The general rise in prices over time, which reduces what a fixed amount of money can buy.
How money is divided among different categories of assets. It is a framework for discussion, not a recommendation.
